Van Niekerk started in the eighth lane and powered around the final bend to beat his previous personal best by 0.45 and win his first Olympic medal. He says Usain Bolt has been a huge inspiration and had predicted his success and came to him after winning the 100m himself and said ‘I told you, you could do it.’ Van Niekerk is surprisingly trained by the same coach as his predecessor; Ans Botha is a 74 year old great grandmother who has been coaching track and field since the 1960’s.

Eldosfm,  South Africa as a whole would like to congratulate Wayde van Niekerk on his victory.
