Eldos FM applied and was successful in attaining two special events (one month) licenses in 2008 before it started to operate under a 5 year (renewable) license in 2009. Eldos FM went on air on 4 December 2009 under the 5 year license and has since, enjoyed the support and interest from the communities far and wide including 12000 internet streaming international listeners, with 5000 from Great Britain. Our listenership and interaction has grown in leaps and bounds since our early amateur days and we are wholly appreciative of all our devoted listeners and enthusiasts, especially the listeners who kept listening and supporting during our trial and error periods.
Eldos FM has a total of 45 forward thinking, agents for social change, most of whom are volunteers and work tirelessly to provide community-relevant education, news, information and entertainment to its audience. The nature of community radio in South Africa is that it provides skills in journalism, sound engineering, news reading, radio presenting, radio producing, reporting and media management to individuals who would otherwise not have the opportunity or platform to attain and/or nurture these talents and skills.

Lend your ears to our local radio dramas broadcasted on “Maak ‘n plan” at 10:15 from Monday to Friday. Eldos FM partnered with I Am Awe-Ness Productions and WYC Radio Drama Work to broadcast stories from and by young people from Westbury and the surrounds under the mentorship of veteran actors Coco Merkel and Esmerelda Bihl.
The drama series entitled “It only takes one line” is more than just a radio drama. It is a project that equip young people to develop, write and perform radio dramas and to enthuse behavioral change.
The project received technical and sound design support from Matias Harju and Kaisa Osola of Helsinki, Finland who are schooling youngsters in radio production at the Westbury Youth Centre. Matias Harju is a lecturer in music and teacher in sound engineering. Kaisa Osola is a teacher in media, speech communication and speech art.
These stories and other field journalistic work by WYC and I AM Awe-Ness Productions can be listened to on https://soundcloud.com/wycradio or can be found in our “videos and podcast’ menu. Please let us/them know what you think about each episode by posting your comments on soundcloud.
